Exploring Choquequirao takes about a two day?s hike from the town of Cachora outside of Cuzco city. Choquequirao, or “cradle of gold” in the Inca language Quechua, is located almost 1750 meters above the raging Apurimac River. Much bigger than Machu Picchu, covering 1810 hectares, the site is thought to have been built by the son of Machu Picchu’s creator.
Choquequirao was probably built during the reign of the Inca king Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui. Led by Manco Inca Yupanqui, the Incas most likely used the site as a refuge when the city of Cuzco was under siege in 1535.
The city was first mentioned in 1710 by Spanish explorer Juan Arias Diaz and again in 1768 by Cosme Bueno, but it was forgotten afterwards. In 1834 Eugene de Santiges rediscovered the site. In 1837 Leonce Agrand mapped the area. Hiram Bingham visited Choquequirao in 1909, about 2 years before he came upon Machu Picchu.
Machu Picchu is more famous than Choquequirao, largely because of Choquequirao former inaccessibility. Before a bridge was built over the Apurimac river a few years ago, it would take tremendous effort through mountainous terrain over about two months to finally reach the ancient city. With the bridge, accessibility to Choquequirao is much more reasonable and this spectacular site is gaining in popularity as archaeologists discover more about its history.
Choquequirao has aqueducts, water channels, living quarters, ceremonial areas, sacred temples, administrative buildings and terraces. To the Incas, Choquequirao was an important religious, political and economic center. These fantastic ruins are built on the mountain ridge of sacred Salkantay and are remnants of the Inca?s final days.

In 1911 Hiram Bingham of Yale University rediscovered ancient Machu Picchu buried under four centuries of lush vegetation. Machu Picchu is located at almost 8,000 feet high in the Andes mountains outside of Cuzco, Peru and just above the town Aguas Calientes. Machu Picchu is full of mystery as no one knows exactly how it was built or why.
Scholars claim that Machu Picchu was built around the year 1450 AD. The style of building found at Machu Picchu in Peru hints at it being constructed in the ?late Imperial Inca? period, during the reign of Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui (or Pachacutec). According to some theories, Machu Picchu existed as an administrative center of control for conquered regions and as a military stronghold. Some believe that ancient Machu Picchu was a ceremonial center, in the heart of high spiritual and earthly energy. The exact purpose of ancient Machu Picchu is open to debate.
Machu Picchu is an architectural marvel. There is no better example of successful ancient civil engineering than Machu Picchu. The huge stones that make up the site are perfectly cut and fit together remarkably well. This superb engineering is defiantly resistant to earthquakes. The builders of Machu Picchu are considered to be one of the best stonemasters in history. They not only used dry stone building techniques for the structures, but for agricultural terraces as well. They did so with large stones over rugged, mountainous terrain and without the use of wheel technology.
Machu Picchu?s Temple of the Sun was dedicated to the Sun God Inti and is the site?s finest example of Inca stonework. Machu Picchu has 16 fountains that were designed to provide water to the residents, irrigate their crop and to show Pachacuti?s manifestation of power.
For unknown reason the Incas completely abandoned Machu Picchu after only about 100 years. The Spanish never discovered ancient Machu Picchu, being busy with wars throughout other areas of the Inca Empire. Because the Spanish did not know about Machu Picchu, some people believe that not many Incas knew about it either. It was Inca custom to build royal retreats when Inca rulers died, so perhaps Machu Picchu was built upon the death of Pachacuti and then forgotten. Until Bingham?s visit, Machu Picchu was inhabited by a small group of Quechans who found the site after Inca abandonment.
To this day scientists, engineers and travelers continue to be fascinated by the wonders of Machu Picchu. There is a feeling of peace, spiritual energy and mystery for many visitors. Breathtaking Machu Picchu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. Hundreds of tourists walk the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu everyday where they may appreciate a beautiful mystery of the lost Inca Empire.

- 7 New Wonders of the World Final Selections – Final jury is in. Approximately 100 million votes were cast via the Internet and cellphone text messages, said New 7 Wonders, the nonprofit organization that conducted the poll, which was released on Saturday.
- Machu Picchu – It lies 43 miles northwest of Cuzco at the top of a ridge, hiding it from the Urabamba gorge below. The ridge is between a block of highland and the massive Huaynac Picchu, around which the Urubamba River takes a sharp bend. The surrounding area is covered in dense bush, some of it covering Pre-Colombian cultivation terraces.

Peru Tours & Travels. Discover Machu Picchu, Inca Trail, Amazon, Colca Canyon, Nazca Lines and More.

Declared as one of the new wonders of the world on 7 July 2007, the ruins of Machu Picchu are a real landmark worldwide. This, coupled with the title of World Heritage Sites, which dates from 1983, concludes that it is currently one of the most important tourist centers in the Americas and the world. Machu Picchu is located in the province of Urubamba in southern Peru, and the nearest major city is the beautiful Cusco Archeological Capital of South America. To arrive at this imposing building made by the Inca Empire, there are several options. One is the traditional Inca Trail, which is a walking tour of three days of the town of Aguas Calientes.
Another is through a railroad that takes three hours for the journey from Cusco to the same city. And the most economical and exhausting, chosen by many backpackers, lies in travel from Cusco to Santa Maria, thence to Santa Teresa, then arrive at what is called “Hydro” and finally about three hours walking the railroad tracks to finally get to Aguas Calientes.
After a little over an hour to climb the stone stairs in the middle of a hot, humid climate where the rains are very frequent, the first view of what is known as “The Citadel” generates a fervent domestic mobilization in the lucky visitors.
The story goes that Machu Picchu, considered a masterpiece of architecture and engineering, was used as resting place by the first Inca emperor, Pachacuti, between 1438 and 1470. Already on 24 June 1911, an American historian Hiram Bingham was named to the ruins and was marked as the “rediscovered”. Bingham, marveling at the place, carried out archaeological work from 1912 to 1915.
However, today it is also necessary to mention the mystery that revolves around Machu Picchu, as more than 45 thousand pieces obtained in the excavations-also made in Huayna Picchu, the mountain that often appears as background in the photographs of complex-questionably left the country and the Peruvian government was never able to recover the material.
These condiments and others make a real phenomenon Machu Picchu architectural, landscape, historical and cultural, which in turn is divided into two sectors: agriculture and urban. And, without room for argument, one of the tourist areas that no mortal should unconsciousness.
